Evaluation

This Final Major Project has probably been my favourite and I think that is mainly down to the work that I have produced this year compared to last year. Last year my final work consisted of a vehicle and a character. The vehicle went well but the character could have been a lot better and so because I knew my strengths was not with character modelling I choose to go with modelling a vehicle and environment as my personal projects.
The environment which was Venice was a tricky one just by the fact that is was set in the future meant I had to use my imagination on what the environment might look like, and I could have chosen a city because they have been used so many times in futuristic films but I wanted to do Venice just because I had never seen it done before. Overall the environment came out the way I wanted it too but I think out of the four projects this one wasn’t my most rewarding one. If I was able to do it again I don’t think I would have designed my own buildings but used ones that existed and worked of that to create something to fit the time period I was going for.
The vehicle I modelled was a GT 500 Eleanor Mustang, which being one of my favourite cars I had lot fun modelling. Well even though I say fun, there were times when I felt like given up, I would spend days modelling the car with it not going right and then starting from scratch the next day but I think it was after my fourth attempt that I managed to get it right. Overall I think the car came out looking great considering that it’s my first car I’ve model, well completed seeing as I’ve model other cars before but never got around to finishing them.
My other two projects were my Collaborative Projects. The first one was for Joe and Aled VFX film “Day 83” I had a lot of fun on this project, I got to model two things for them, one being a jet and the other being an alien weapon and on top of that I got to act in the film as a soldier. Originally I was only meant to design and model the jet but when they asked me to do the Alien weapon, even though I hadn’t done any design work for it I said yes. Overall the two models went well and I don’t think I would change anything about them, well maybe the red button that stands out on the weapon.
The final Collaborative was for the guys working on “Rust” outside of Uni. For this I designed and made a whole new character for them called Razor. Out of the models this year this one was my favourite, the guys took a big risk letting me design a new character for their game and so I had a lot pressure on me to get it right, but in the end the model came out looking great and even they were happy with the way it looked.

Vehicle (Highpoly)

Just finished of the highpoly version of the car and have made a start on the texturing as well. Hopefully I should have it finished by tommorrow. Which then gives me a whole week to render out my other projects and get my showreel looking really nice.

Vehicle Update

Just finished the modelling for the car, my goal was to get the poly count bellow 10,000 but I only managed to get it to 12,000. Not what I wanted but It will have to do.

The next step is going to be to create a high poly version and add on details such as the grills on the car and the badge, which I will then project back onto the low poly. Hoping to get this all done by today so that I can unwrap it tommorrow.

vehicle update

Hey guys so I'm back modelling my car, when I left the car to start texturing my environment not much had been done and one reason why I left it for some time was due to the fact that I was having issues with modelling the front of the car. Well I guess taking a break from the modelling did me some good because I actually managed to sort it out. The model as a whole isn't finished yet but I should be able to get it done by the end of tonight, if not then around lunch time tommorrow.

Environment (99% done)

Been working on creating water for my environment, at the beginning I thought it was going to be a challenge that would take up most of my day but it was actually quite easy to do. The environment as a whole is pratically done now, the only thing left to do is add in a sky dome for some atmospheric background. However I'm going to have to put my environment to the side just for a couple of days so that I can carry on with my vehicle as i'm a bit behind on my schedule and the deadline is close.

Back to Work

I've been away in Turkey for the past 7 days and so I havn't been able to update my blog untill now. Anyway, finally finished the rest of the houses and I'm pleased with the way they've turned out, still got a lot more texturing to do for my environment and i'm hoping to have at least 90% of it done by sunday night.

House

So yesterday i began to texture my environment, my plan was to atleast get 3 of the house done but didn't even manage to finish one, and this was down to the fact that I wasn't using tiling but just using the unwrap. Today I gotten alot more done and this time I did use tiling but I also was able to use the unwrap at the same time. For the texture I've basically tiled the walls and then projected the texture back onto the unwrap, this allowed me to put the texture back into photoshop and add more textures such as grime. Also for the wall I used Crazy Bump to get a normal map out of the texture to add a bit more depth to it and the walls above the brick wall (with the patterns) I model them myselfs and then projected back onto the lowpoly version in order to get the normal map from that.

Because the environment is set in the future i decided at the early stage of my pre-production that I wasn't going to make the houses seem brand new but a mixture of old and new, and that why in this texture there is a damaged wall but then there is also a door that is designed to slide open. (which also to fit the renaissance I've done a decorative pattern on the door) Still gots some more work to do on it but apart from that I'm pleased with the way its starting to turn out

Environment

Done a bit more work on my environment today, its starting to look pretty good and I'm hoping to be unwraping and texturing it tommorrow

Tuesday, 5 April 2011

car props

Today I started to model some of the cars props such as the mirror, hub caps and gas cap etc. The car still isn't finished but it is getting there, I just need to model the front and back but due to the fact that the front of the car has a very akward shape to it, its definatly something that will take some time to do.

GT 500 Eleanor

Started to model my vehicle for my personal project this week, I had hoped to get it finished by friday but unfortunatly that didn't happened. This was mainly because I started the model again due to the fact that I wasn't liking the way it looked, this actually happened 3 times and on the fourth model it was finally going in the right direction. Due to the fact that I've wasted nearly a week on this I do plan to do more modelling over the weekend to catch up with my schedule.

Environment update

This week I've been spending alot of my time finnishing of my environment of venice (set in the future), I've got the basic structure of what its going to look like and all I need to do now is add a few more details which should take me a day to do at the most.

Locomotive

Hey guys thought I would post a model that I started to work on tonight, been at it for a good hour now and I think its looking pretty cool. However because its not part of my uni work i'm only going to spend time working on it when I have free time. So in saying that chances are this model won't be finnished until late June.

The Gun is Done

Finally got the texture finsihed for the Alien's weapon, which also means that all my colab projects are done. Next week I will be carrying on with my personal projects and plan to spend next week working on modelling the rest of my environment.

Alien Heavy Gun Texture

Finished unwrapping the gun yesterday and started to texture it today. Its nearly there but I do want to add a few more details like dirt and scratches. The texture also has an Ambient Occlusion which needs a bit more tweaking and a specular map.

Alien Heavy Gun

I got asked to do an alien weapon for the VFX film and I said yes. I didn't do any work for it over my Pre-production since I was only asked to do it last week. Because of this I didn't bother with any drawings and just went straight into modelling it, anyway this is what I've come up with.

F44 (Done)

Well, just finished the Jet for the film and thought I would post it on the blog

Wednesday, 9 March 2011

Razor (Done)

So I finished the texturing for Razor, and I sent it of to the guys who I'm working with on this project outside of Uni and they are very pleased with it and so am I. Out of all the models I've done this one has to be my favourite, a lot of the artwork I do I always tend to come back to it once its done and think I could have done so much better or I should have done it this way, but for Razor I don't think that will be happening.

Razor (Almost done)

Past couple of days I've been finnishing of the texture for Razor. I've added a Normal Map from a highpoly version I did, and he also has a specular map as well. Still has some tweaking to do but overall I'm very pleased with the way its turned out

Environment

I Should be updated this blog often but I keep forgetting about it, anyway not much has happened since my last post, I'm still texturing right now but in my spare time I've been working on my Environment for my personal project.

razor final model

So after sending the guys the Razor model they asked me to add a few more features to the model, after that was done, I sent it back to them which they've approved. Next task will be texturing

Jet Texture

For the past few days i've been working on texturing the jet, the jet had to look as if its been in battle all ready so I dirt up the texture and added scratches and rust to give it that look.

Jet model

Finnished modelling the Jet today, now its just the boring task of unwrapping. Also had some free time today so I decided to model a heavy machine gun, took about hour to do and I'm probably not going to texture it, but I do have it saved incase I change my mind in the future
